Charges Against Tribe Pitcher Hernandez to Be Dropped

While the Indians have yet to comment on it, reports from the AP are that a deal has been reached by Indians pitcher Roberto Hernandez to have false identity charges against him dropped.

Reports says the charges against him will be dropped in return for completing a work program in his Caribbean homeland. Court documents obtained Monday by The Associated Press show how the deal was obtained.

Formerly known as Fausto Carmona, Hernandez was placed on baseball’s restricted list after he was arrested in the Dominican Republic last month. Authorities say he is 31, three years older than the pitcher claimed.

Albert Belle Visits the Indians in Goodyear at Spring Training

Albert Belle came back to the Indians.

Once one of the game’s most feared hitters, Belle made a surprise visit to Cleveland’s spring training complex Tuesday and spent most of the morning reminiscing with former teammates Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Sandy Alomar and manager Mike Hargrove about the days when the Indians ruled the AL.

Belle had not been back to see the club since 1996, when he left as a free agent.

Belle was the ringleader of a Cleveland team than went 100-44 in 1995 and made the World Series. He retired in 2001, forced out by a bad hip. He now lives in Arizona, where he’s a stay-at-home dad raising four daughters.

Baerga and Lofton brought Belle back to help repair his rocky relationship with the Indians.

Sizemore to Miss Opening Day with Back Strain

It’s another blow for the Indians and outfielder Grady Sizemore, and at this point – should anyone really be surprised?

The Indians today announced that Sizemore has a strained lower back and will miss opening day. “I feel awful for Grady,” Tribe GM Chris Antonetti said. “He has worked so diligently in his rehab.”

Sizemore injured his back a few weeks ago while working his way back from knee surgery. Trainer Lonnie Soloff says there is no timetable on his return. Sizemore has been shut off from all baseball activities as the Indians wait to see how he responds to treatment.

Before he was hurt, Sizemore was hitting and running without any restrictions. Despite his past injuries, the Indians signed him as a free agent in November to a one-year, incentive-laden contract with a $5 million base.

Sizemore played in just 71 games last season and went on the disabled list three times.
