Can Acta Keep Giving the Ball to a Struggling Tomlin Once the Season Starts?

Sunday was another tough day for Indians thrower Josh Tomlin. As a matter a fact, he’s had a tough spring overall, as his last three starts have all been disaster.

Tomlin has allowed 14 runs on 24 hits over his last 10 innings. In just his last two starts vs the Rangers and KC, he’s given up 10 earned runs in 7 innings.

There’s no question that Tomlin is going to stick in the rotation, but after Manny Acta sat back and watched Ubaldo Jiminez have another poor outing Saturday, you have to wonder if there’s concern about both he and Tomlin.

“Tough matchup for Tomlin, contact pitcher, wind blowing out,” Acta said. “But he got his work in, four innings of work, 67 pitches, it was enough.”

Speaking to Tomlin early on Sunday before the start, he seemed at ease about the fact his numbers have been bad this spring.

“That’s just how it is, everyone’s going to look at the numbers and ask what’s going on, is he still hurt,” Tomlin said. “Stuff wise it’s about me going out and attacking the bottom of the zone and try to get outs as much as I can.

“I know that’s not necessarily the case so far, but I’m just going out and getting my work in, trying to get my pitch count up as much as I can, and be ready when the season comes.”

The Indians are counting on Tomlin in a big way. If these numbers don’t get better, a huge part of the Indians starting rotation is going to be in flux as it will be interesting to see how long they can go with both Tomlin and Jiminez struggling.
