Sizemore to Miss Opening Day with Back Strain

It’s another blow for the Indians and outfielder Grady Sizemore, and at this point – should anyone really be surprised?

The Indians today announced that Sizemore has a strained lower back and will miss opening day. “I feel awful for Grady,” Tribe GM Chris Antonetti said. “He has worked so diligently in his rehab.”

Sizemore injured his back a few weeks ago while working his way back from knee surgery. Trainer Lonnie Soloff says there is no timetable on his return. Sizemore has been shut off from all baseball activities as the Indians wait to see how he responds to treatment.

Before he was hurt, Sizemore was hitting and running without any restrictions. Despite his past injuries, the Indians signed him as a free agent in November to a one-year, incentive-laden contract with a $5 million base.

Sizemore played in just 71 games last season and went on the disabled list three times.
