Talk about getting yourself in a sticky situation. Tribe pitcher Fausto Carmona isn’t exactly who we all thought he was. Literally.
The pitcher who set a career-high with 15 losses last year has been arrested and accused of using a false identity in the Dominican Republic.
According to Maximo Aybar Baez, a Dominican police spokesman, Carmona was arrested while trying to renew his visa at the American consulate.
The police say that Carmona is actually 31 years old, not 28, and his name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia.
“This arrest is part of the measures taken by the National Police (NP), in coordination with the American Consulate. The NP invited Dominican prospects not to be misled by those who sell fake illusions based on illegality,” Baez said on Twitter in a report translated by ESPNDeportes’ Enrique Rojas.
The Indians picked up Carmona’s $7 million option for 2012 earlier in the offseason. According the charge, as documented by CBSSports.com, Carmona was 20 when he signed with the Indians in 2000, though documents showed he was 17.
Carmona – a one-time 19-game winner in 2007, was 7-15 with a 5.25 ERA last season.
What will the Indians do? They can if they want void the contract with Hernandez/Carmona. Or they can bail him out, wait for him to get a new visa, and pretend nothing happened.
In the end though, the Indians should really think of dumping Carmona/Hernandez, and look for that elusive bat that has not come their way all offseason.

A good trade for both sides would be AJ and Swisher to the Indians for Grady Sizemore and Fausto Carmona. The Indians desperately want Swisher. So they can have him if they take AJ. Meanwhile, the Yanks are assume risk also, since Sizemore is coming off of a bad injury and Carmona has an identity problem. If Sizemore resorts back to his old form, he is better than Swisher, plus he will be two years removed from his injury. Assuming Carmona can resolve his identity problems, a reunion with CC may bring him back to his Cy Young form.
